Downstep — Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 23, 2026

Downstep is a breath-following app made for moments of anxiety. This policy explains, plainly, what happens to your data when you use it.

Short version

Downstep does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data. There is no account, no login, and no analytics. Everything the app does happens on your device only.

Microphone

If you choose "Listen with Mic," Downstep uses your device's microphone to measure the amplitude of sound in real time, purely to estimate your breathing rate. This audio is processed instantly on your device and is never recorded, saved, or sent anywhere — not to us, not to any third party. You can use the app's "Track by Touch" mode instead if you'd prefer never to grant microphone access at all.

What's stored on your device

Downstep remembers a small set of preferences — your chosen input mode, sound on/off, atmosphere choice, and backdrop theme — using standard iOS local storage (UserDefaults). This stays on your device and is never transmitted anywhere. Uninstalling the app removes it.

Third parties

Downstep uses no analytics services, no advertising networks, and no third-party SDKs of any kind.

Children's privacy

Downstep does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children, because it does not collect information at all.

Changes to this policy
